Aging skin

Volumes of books are written about how to treat and prevent aging skin! A variety of modalities like lasers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion are utilized to tackle the signs and symptoms of aging. But there are certain things we can do at home to postpone the need for these treatments. So here are my Top 5 anti-aging tips:

1) Utilize home scrubs at least 3 times a week: Don’t waste your time and money on rotating brushes and other in-home devices. A good scrub with effective microbeads are the closest we can get to a microdermabrasion at home. This mechanical treatment exfoliates the superficial dead skin layer, allowing for all other treatments to penetrate deeper into the skin. Try Elavo Keratin Scrub; start by using two to three times a day,  and increase use as tolerated.

2) Vitamin A is your friend! Vitamin A derivatives have been studied extensively in dermatology and the positive effects on the skin are well observed. Start out with non-prescription retinol creams at night (the sun will de-activate the product,  so use it only at night). Be careful when applying under the eye (in  fact I recommend using it under the eye only every other night). With time, I generally advance patients to prescription derivatives such as tretinoin.

3) Cleanser with salicyclic acid: Salicyclic acid is a beta-acid, which means it dissolves in oil. This allows for better removal of sebum that accumulates on the top of the skin without drying out the skin significantly. Try Elavo Beta Cleanser and you won’t have any regrets.

4) Use moisturizers with anti-oxidants: Keeping the skin hydrated from the inside, as well as the outside is key. But when picking your moisturizer make sure it contains natural anti-oxidants. This is especially true for the skin around the eyes: the thinnest skin in our body. The effects of aging and weathering are most prominent around the eyes, and using potent anti-oxidants can postpone the onset of fine lines and wrinkles. Elavo Radiant Eyes is a powerful eye complex with natural antioxidants that is most effective when used diligently every night.

5) Wear sunscreen every day! Yes, even  during the winter. The effects of sun on our skin is cumulative: so the sunburn we got as a child will have long lasting effects on how are skin ages. So our effort to prevent a sunburn and excessive tanning now will have long lasting benefits to our skin for years to come. For most people spf 15 during the winter, and spf 30 or higher during the summer is sufficient. The key is not to get caught up in the spf, but to apply the sunscreen every 2 hours. Don’t forget to try Elavo Solar Defense with SPF 30.
